What if I do not know an answer?

Practice this question

Short explanation:

An honest answer can still show strong engineering judgment when part of a topic is unfamiliar. Clearly separate facts you know, assumptions you are making and details you would verify. This lets the interviewer assess your reasoning without being misled by confident guesses.

Key points:

  • Say which part you know and which part you need to check.

  • Explain how you would verify it with docs, logs or a small example.

  • Do not invent project details or performance numbers.

  • If possible, work through a small example and say what observation would change your conclusion.

Interview point:

  • A specific verification plan is more useful than inventing a framework rule or pretending a proposed design was implemented.
