How do you maintain code quality?

Practice this question
Discussion template: use your own project facts, ownership, and measured outcomes. Bracketed text is a placeholder.

Short explanation:

Code quality is the ability of a codebase to remain correct, understandable and safe to change. It comes from clear design, meaningful tests, review and feedback from production behavior. Tools enforce some consistency, but they do not replace sound business rules or ownership of dependencies.

Key points:

  • Use clear names, focused modules, types and consistent formatting.

  • Review changes and test important success/failure cases.

  • Watch production behavior and fix recurring causes, not just individual symptoms.

  • Keep changes focused and explain why a new abstraction or dependency is necessary.

Interview point:

  • Give an actual practice and the defect or maintenance problem it prevents.
