How would you design an HR integration platform?

Practice this question

Short explanation:

An HR integration platform synchronizes employee-related data between systems that may use different IDs and update rules. Its main difficulty is deciding ownership and resolving partial, delayed or conflicting updates. Provider adapters keep vendor-specific authentication and data formats separate from the internal employee model.

Key points:

  • Ask which system owns each employee field and how fresh the data must be.

  • Use provider adapters, external-ID mappings and queued sync jobs.

  • Handle rate limits, record conflicts, protect employee data and expose sync status.

  • Keep mappings between internal IDs and provider IDs, plus last-sync state and per-record errors.

  • Distinguish a full backfill from incremental updates and protect sensitive employee fields with tenant-scoped access.

Interview point:

  • Explain which system wins when two sources update the same field, and how an operator discovers records that failed to sync.
