LangChain overview, models, prompts, and chains
Words made simple
A few useful meanings before you read the explanation.
- API
- A way for one piece of software to ask another for data or an action. A claims API might return the current status of a claim.
- Retrieval
- Finding and fetching information that is useful for the current question.
- Schema
- A description of the fields and value types that data should contain. It helps check that an answer has the expected shape.
More words from this lesson
- Agent
- An application that uses a model to choose its next action within defined limits. It can use tools and continue through several steps.
- Trace
- A linked record of the steps in one request, including model calls, retrieval and tools. It helps locate delays or failures.
- HTTP
- The request-and-response protocol used on the web. HTTPS adds encryption to protect information in transit.
- SDK
- A set of code tools provided to help an application use a service or framework.

Overview
- LangChain is a framework ecosystem for assembling model-driven applications.
- Model wrappers, prompt templates, and composable operations make integration easier.
- A chain is a sequence of transformations or calls; it can be fixed and does not automatically mean an agent.
Why this matters
It reduces repetitive integration code when an application uses multiple models, retrieval components, and tools.
An everyday example
A toolkit provides compatible parts, while you still decide what machine to build.
A technical example
prompt → model → schema parser forms a simple fixed chain.
How it works
- Choose components
- Define inputs/outputs
- Compose calls
- Inject model/provider configuration
- Execute with callbacks or tracing
- Validate results.
Architecture and flow
Application → prompt/model adapters → composed chain → validated result.
The insurance assistant example
Share a policy-answer prompt and retriever adapter across several product assistants.
When to use it
Several integrations, reusable components, or an ecosystem that reduces actual maintenance.
When to avoid it
A single hosted API call often needs only its SDK and Zod.
Interview answer
“LangChain provides reusable model, prompt, tool, and retrieval components. I use it where the abstractions simplify the application, while keeping business logic explicit.”
Benefits, trade-offs, and production considerations
- Framework abstraction can obscure request payloads, retries, and costs.
- Know the actual provider calls and pin versions.
- Modern LangChain agent APIs use LangGraph underneath; older chain/agent tutorials may use outdated imports.
