Input, output, and tool guardrails
Words made simple
A few useful meanings before you read the explanation.
- Guardrail
- A check or control that limits unsuitable inputs, actions or outputs. Important rules should also be enforced by application code.
- AI
- Software techniques for tasks such as recognizing patterns, understanding language or generating content.
- Deterministic
- Following steps or rules defined by code. The model does not decide which step should run next in a deterministic workflow.
More words from this lesson
- Trace
- A linked record of the steps in one request, including model calls, retrieval and tools. It helps locate delays or failures.
- Latency
- How long a request takes to return a result. Lower latency usually means a shorter wait for the user.
🔴 MUST KNOW · Guardrails reduce errors; authoritative controls must enforce critical rules.
Overview
- Input guardrails check requests and incoming content.
- Output guardrails check generated answers or data.
- Tool guardrails check proposed operations before execution and validate their results afterward.
Why this matters
AI errors and abuse can enter at different points, so one final answer filter is insufficient.
An everyday example
A factory checks raw materials, controls machine operation, and inspects the finished product.
A technical example
Reject oversized uploads, forbid unapproved email recipients, and block an unsupported coverage statement.
How it works
- Define risk-specific checks
- Run before expensive or consequential steps
- Enforce block/clarify/escalate outcomes
- Trace reasons
- Evaluate false accepts/rejects.
Architecture and flow
Input check → model → tool check → service → output check → response.
The insurance assistant example
The insurer checks document size before parsing and checks approval before claim submission.
When to use it
All production paths, with controls proportionate to their impact.
When to avoid it
Do not treat a single “is this safe?” model call as a complete security boundary.
Interview answer
“I place guardrails at input, tool, and output boundaries. Deterministic controls enforce permissions and business invariants.”
Benefits, trade-offs, and production considerations
- Checks add latency and can reject legitimate requests.
- Fail closed for permission and irreversible-action checks; use a safe clarification or degraded response for uncertain content checks.
- Record which control blocked the task.

Check your explanation
Input guardrails check requests and incoming content. Output guardrails check generated answers or data. Tool guardrails check proposed operations before execution and validate their results afterward.
