Words made simple

A few useful meanings before you read the explanation.

Retrieval
Finding and fetching information that is useful for the current question.
Vector
An ordered list of numbers. An embedding is a vector used to represent content for tasks such as similarity search.
Grounding
Connecting an answer to supplied evidence, such as a policy document or a verified database result.

Agent
An application that uses a model to choose its next action within defined limits. It can use tools and continue through several steps.
Authorization
Checking what that identity is allowed to read or do. Being logged in does not grant access to every record.
Tenant
A customer or organization whose data must stay separate from other customers in a shared application.
Metadata
Extra information describing a record, such as its owner, date, policy version or document type.

Overview

  • Summarization compresses earlier interaction into a shorter record.
  • Memory retrieval selects relevant stored entries, sometimes through vectors and metadata.
  • Both reduce context volume but can lose or distort information.

Why this matters

Long histories exceed budgets and contain unrelated details.

An everyday example

A handover note highlights key decisions instead of replaying every phone call.

A technical example

Keep confirmed facts, unresolved questions, and source IDs in separate fields; retrieve relevant past task outcomes for the current case.

How it works

  1. Select eligible records
  2. Summarize or retrieve
  3. Preserve facts/provenance
  4. Validate sensitive/high-impact fields
  5. Merge with fresh tool data.

Architecture and flow

History/memory → scoped selection → summary/relevance filter → current context.

The insurance assistant example

The summary says an invoice was requested, while a current tool confirms whether it has now arrived.

When to use it

Long conversations and recurring tasks where selected continuity improves outcomes.

When to avoid it

Do not use an unverified summary as the only record of consent, amounts, or claim submission.

Interview answer

“I compress dialogue for context efficiency, preserve verified structured facts separately, and retrieve memory using both relevance and permissions.”

Benefits, trade-offs, and production considerations

  • Evaluate summaries for lost conditions and invented facts.
  • Use memory TTLs, confidence categories grounded in provenance, deletion propagation, and tenant/user filtering before retrieval.

  • The context builder selects data; it does not grant access.
  • Fresh tool results outrank stale conversational claims.
  • Memory candidates are checked before writing, so an agent cannot turn arbitrary text into authoritative user facts.

Can you explain it without the notes?

Context summarization and memory retrieval

Use your own words. Explain an example and one limitation before checking the explanation.

Check your explanation
