Moderation and PII detection
Words made simple
A few useful meanings before you read the explanation.
- PII
- Information that can identify a person, such as a name, address or identity number.
- Authorization
- Checking what that identity is allowed to read or do. Being logged in does not grant access to every record.
- Trace
- A linked record of the steps in one request, including model calls, retrieval and tools. It helps locate delays or failures.
Overview
- Content moderation categorizes content that may violate a product policy.
- PII detection identifies potentially private identity-linked information for masking, routing, or restricted handling.
- Both can use rules and models, and neither is perfectly accurate.
Why this matters
Public interfaces encounter abuse, while support documents contain private information that should not be sent or logged unnecessarily.
An everyday example
A receptionist redirects abusive behavior while a records clerk hides unnecessary personal details.
A technical example
Detect account numbers before trace logging; route a threatening message according to the organization's support policy.
How it works
- Apply scoped checks
- Classify affected fields/content
- Redact or route
- Preserve permitted task evidence
- Record safe reason codes
- Evaluate errors.
Architecture and flow
Content → moderation/PII checks → allowed, redacted, reviewed, or blocked path.
The insurance assistant example
Accident descriptions may legitimately include injuries; avoid blocking all such content while protecting sensitive details.
When to use it
User-facing applications, external document intake, and sensitive-data handling.
When to avoid it
Do not assume a regex finds all PII or use moderation as a substitute for account authorization.
Interview answer
“Moderation handles product-content policy; PII detection supports data minimization. I evaluate both for domain-specific false positives and misses.”
Benefits, trade-offs, and production considerations
- Store minimal labels rather than full rejected content in ordinary logs.
- Provide an escalation route where policy allows legitimate work despite uncertain classification.
