Words made simple

A few useful meanings before you read the explanation.

Embedding
A list of numbers that represents the meaning of some content. Similar meanings can produce nearby lists of numbers.
Quantization
Representing model numbers with fewer bits to reduce memory use. Quality and speed depend on the method and hardware.
Inference
Using a model that has already been trained to produce an answer or prediction.

Vector
An ordered list of numbers. An embedding is a vector used to represent content for tasks such as similarity search.
Evaluation
Checking results against examples and clear criteria to find whether the system works well and where it fails.
Latency
How long a request takes to return a result. Lower latency usually means a shorter wait for the user.
HTTP
The request-and-response protocol used on the web. HTTPS adds encryption to protect information in transit.

Overview

  • Quantization represents model values with fewer bits to reduce memory and sometimes improve speed.
  • GGUF is a model file format used by compatible local inference runtimes; it is not itself a model or a guarantee of quantization level.
  • Local embeddings run an embedding model within your environment.

Why this matters

Hardware limits and data restrictions can make smaller representations and private embedding generation useful.

An everyday example

Compress a map so it fits in a smaller bag while checking that essential details remain legible.

A technical example

Evaluate an 8-bit or 4-bit model against the uncompressed baseline on dates, identifiers, and structured extraction.

How it works

  1. Choose supported representation/runtime
  2. Convert or download reviewed artifact
  3. Load
  4. Compare quality/latency/memory
  5. Serve approved version.

Architecture and flow

Reviewed model → compatible quantized artifact → runtime → task evaluation.

The insurance assistant example

A local embedding service indexes policies without sending source text to an external embedding endpoint.

When to use it

Memory-constrained deployment after quality testing, or approved private embeddings.

When to avoid it

Do not assume all 4-bit formats perform alike or mix local query vectors with an unrelated hosted embedding index.

Interview answer

“Quantization reduces numerical precision and memory, with possible quality loss. I benchmark the exact artifact and keep embedding spaces consistent.”

Benefits, trade-offs, and production considerations

  • Speed gains depend on kernels and hardware; quantization can add overhead on unsuitable systems.
  • Keep artifact format, precision, runtime compatibility, and model identity distinct.
  • GGUF documentation.
